Norwood Italian Lodge #1235 2023 Scholarship Awards
The Norwood Italian Lodge #1235, a local chapter of the Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, recently held its Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner, on May 31st, 2023, at Conrad’s Restaurant, in Walpole, Norwood Lodge President, Steve Eosco, greeted the 44 members and guests who supported the event. Scholarship Chairwoman Toni Eosco made several introductions, recognizing lodge members, Barbara Campagna and Winnie Carfagno, for their volunteer work on the lodge’s scholarship committee. Toni Eosco also recognized Denise Furnari, the Massachusetts Grand Lodge Sons and Daughters of Italy in America President, for agreeing to be the guest speaker. Furnari has served four years as the state president and recently completed her term of office. Members expressed their appreciation with thanks and applause. Scholarship award presentations took place shortly after a delicious dinner buffet.
The Italian Lodge has a long history of supporting youth, education, and Italian culture. Through the volunteer work of its members to raise funds, and through the addition of memorial funds and other generous donations, the Norwood Italian Lodge #1235 awarded two $1,000 Scholarships.
Committee member, Barbara Campagna, made the first award presentation to Jenna Naumann, a graduate of Norwood High School. Jenna is the daughter of William and Gina Naumann, and granddaughter of lodge member, Mary Ann Naumann, of Norwood. Jenna will pursue her degree in business at the University of Maryland. Scholarship committee member, Winnie Carfagno, made the second scholarship presentation to Nicole Martin, a graduate of Walpole High School. Nicole is the daughter of Ava (also a lodge member) and Michael Martin, and the granddaughter of lodge member, Terry Holland, and the great niece of lodge member, Carmela Thornton. Nicole will pursue her degree in elementary education at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Lodge members congratulated both of these excellent students. In addition to outstanding academic records and community service, they earned high praise from their coaches and counselors. Lodge members wished them success in their new challenges and endeavors.
Grand Lodge President and Norwood lodge member, Denise Furnari, delivered remarks to the membership and congratulated the scholarship winners, encouraging them to always remember their Italian roots and their families who have supported them over the years, and to consider joining a filial lodge when they complete their university degrees.
